Death Meditation is a guided meditation practice familiarizing participants, regardless of religious or spiritual background, with a feeling-based awareness of themselves using breath, mantra, and gentle movement. The aim is to awaken one’s inner-guide to assist us as we pass between life and death (no matter where you are in life’s journey).
In eastern esoteric spiritual traditions, life is ultimately seen as an occasion to practice and prepare one for death. Being born in a body is the opportunity to advance the soul towards the ultimate liberation (reconnection with the infinite, universal source) because each moment is perceived as an opportunity to transcend identification (the cause of suffering) with the illusion that the body presides in.
Andrea’s 15+ years experience as a psychotherapist in private practice, combined with her training as Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Teacher and End of Life Doula, merges Eastern experiential knowledge on death and dying with a keen sensitivity to The West’s avoidance of—and fear of—death.
Each class is 60 minutes long and will begin with a 10-minute explanation of the meditation and its purpose. The remaining 50 minutes will consist of guided meditation, breath, and gentle movement to make room for higher states of consciousness while being fully present (not hypnosis, for example).
The goal of this class is not only to assist you to reduce your fear of death and prepare you for the end of life but also to establish a community of like-minded people with whom to share this collective experience.
Andrea Skitch has studied meditation in the Kundalini Yoga, Tantric yoga lineage, with elements of Buddhist practices for the last 10 years. Having overcome her own autoimmune issues, PTSD, and mental imbalances through various modalities including yoga, she is now on a mission to assist others in reaching their potential in this lifetime by relating more positively to the end of it. Andrea completed an End of Life Doula training in 2023, and has supported many people personally and professionally to have a dignified, graceful death experience. She is a singer with the Threshold Singers, a volunteer group which sings gentle, healing music at the bedside of people in transition in Toronto. Andrea is a mother, a partner, a friend, and an artist at heart.
